Motion sensors may not be a typical concern when you are thinking about your outdoor lighting. But surely you are like most people and are concerned with day-to-day safety.

Safety comes up in conversation every day. The new safety features on that SUV or exactly how much safer is flying anyway. Safety is a very important issue and securing your home should be no different.

Getting motion sensors for your outdoor lighting is a great investment if you’re looking for that one thing, safety. They really only do one thing. They turn the light on when something moves within its range. The lights stay on for a predetermined time, usually about 30 seconds, and then turn off again.

The most ideal place for motion sensors is above the garage door. With that placement, it provides security to the centermost part of your home. If you pull into the drive after dark, the lights will turn on and allow you to see your way to your home.

No one likes to walk to the door in the dark; your imagination will start imagining some criminal in the bushes or a cougar ready to strike. This probably isn’t the case, but you’ll feel safer if you have light.

They also have an economical benefit that a lot of people overlook. Since the light is only designed to stay on for a certain amount of time, there’s no worry about someone forgetting to turn it off. Or perhaps you want to turn off the exterior lights when you go to bed, you can be assured that the front of your home is still covered.

Another benefit is the built in sensitivity dial. Not only can you control the length of time the light stays on, you can set it to light up when something is 15 feet away or 3 feet away.

Most home improvement stores have a wide selection of motion sensor, so your options are vast. Check the packaging to find the light that will suit your needs best.

Surely it must be admitted that people lead busy lives today. Between work and family and upkeep on a home, there is a lot to be done in 24 hours. Some small things fall through the cracks. If you’ve ever woken up in the morning and found that you left the outdoor lighting on, then the use of photoelectric switches may be right for you.

The photoelectric switch can also be called a photocell or photoeye. They are small little “eyes” about the size of a nickel. The technology allows your outdoor lighting to turn itself on when the sun disappears and turn them back off when it rises in the morning.

Not only does this leave you one less thing to remember every day, it will save you on the electric bill. But most importantly because they are so small, they can be added to your fixtures without being obvious.

Photoelectric switches are becoming increasingly popular simply for their convenience. In fact, they are so popular that many lighting fixtures are now coming with the switches pre-installed. You would be hard pressed to walk into a Home Depot and not find them. Installing these switches yourself is easy and fast, and can help with safety, time saving and save you economically.

Picture this, you left your house in a rush and forgot to turn on the outside lights. You return later than expected only to find the house completely dark. Not only do you run the risk of falling because you can’t see, but as safe as your neighborhood is there’s always a chance for something to go wrong.

Another great safety feature is if you go away on vacation. Instead of relying on an automatic timer, which could malfunction, you’re relying on the sun to turn on your lights. Since the sun in unlikely to fail or disappear you can rest assured that your lights will be on as if you were home. You really can’t argue with a device that saves you money, saved you time and makes your home safer

Solar outdoor lighting is a very low-maintenance lighting that is becoming increasingly popular. As the world puts a focus on a healthier environment, anything that leads us away from traditional electricity is seen as an improvement.

Solar lighting has gotten very advanced in the last handful of years, to the point where only a few hours of sunlight are needed to fully charge the batteries. But you may be wondering how versatile solar lighting it, and the answer is very.

Solar outdoor lighting is probably the most popular with the more traditional outdoor fixtures. Anything from illuminating the path from your driveway to providing light for a pool area, solar lighting is ideal.

It is safe for use around water and eliminates unnecessary cords and wires. The only possible drawback is that the panel must be placed somewhere where the sun can get to it, so if your yard is exceptionally shady this may be difficult.

A less thought of use for solar lighting is with your seasonal Christmas or holiday decorations. Normally these decorations and lights create overloaded circuits, a high electric bill, and possible fire risk.

Instead of all this, you can get strings of lights that each have a small solar panel that will completely charge in about three hours. There is no risk of a fire because of an overloaded circuit and it won’t impact your electric bill.

If you have a lot of sculptures or statues in your yard you can use solar lighting very well to illuminate them. This is a great way to let any visitors to your home see your lovely additions at any hour of the day or night.

A similar idea is to use these in an eternal light monument. This is a very elegant and nice to pay tribute to a passed on loved one. Creating a small monument in your yard and illuminating is with solar lighting could be the perfect solution.

Using proper outdoor home lighting is an essential point for selling your home. Lighting can influence a potential buyer’s feelings about your home. While you may not be doing open houses after dark, the For Sale sign will attract attention 24 hours a day. Most everyone has heard the term curb appeal, now its time to know how to use it.

First you need to consider the time of year that you want to begin selling your home. If you are selling your home in the winter, you will want to focus your outdoor lighting scheme on creating a warm and sheltering feeling. If you are selling in the summer, your lighting should reflect more of a vacation getaway feel.

Maybe you can consider using lanterns to light the area during the summer, or tiki torches that are becoming so popular these days. In the winter, up-lighting your yard will give a warm and welcoming feeling that will invite visitors to your home. You will also want to consider the natural daylight patterns for the season.

Knowing when the light is hitting your home and what it’s illuminating is important. To create a more natural feeling to exterior of your home you should try and recreate what the sun does. Make note of what it shadows and the effect it creates.

Also don’t forget to use outdoor home lighting to showcase the best aspects of your home and yard. Potential buyers are going to want to see the best, if only the worst is showcased then that is all they will remember. If you have a beautiful pond, then be sure your lighting brings emphasis to that. Featuring your backyard decorative lighting will always attract compliments.

On the other hand if you have less than desirable aspects of your yard, you can use clever lighting to hide those aspects. For example, if your yard is very small then use most of your lighting around the backside of the yard and the walkways. This gives the illusion that the walkway is the most important aspect and the actual size of the yard will not be as apparent.

Installing outdoor patio lighting is a fantastic addition to your home but you should also be aware of how to make it safe. If installed incorrectly you run the risk of fires or accidentally electrocuting one of your guests. These are absolutely things you wish to avoid, so there are a few tips you can follow to keep you, your family, and your guests safe.

The first thing you need to do is carefully check your outdoor patio lighting on a regular basis. You are looking for anything unusual or out of the ordinary. If a socket appears frayed or worn then you need to have this repaired.

Also be on the lookout for cracks and bent fixtures. It’s also possible that if there is any exposed wiring that is may have become victim to an animal chewing on it. They may not do enough damage to injure themselves but may do enough to damage the wire.

Checking for bare wires is an essential part of this inspection. Loose wires can also be dangerous; they can result in sparks and a house fire. Make sure all the wires are securely in place and entirely encased in the protective outer casing.

While doing your inspection you also need to be sure the lighting fixtures themselves are secure. A few windy nights or a particularly bad storm could loosen the fixtures and this could cause them to fall since they are not properly secured. When placing these fixtures outside you may consider fixing them to something sturdier than a pole, a tree would make a good post.

If you are installing these fixtures yourself it is completely necessary to make sure you are not nailing or stapling any of the lighting cords. You could seriously injure yourself. Finally, make sure that there is enough room for the lighting in the home’s circuit breaker.

Overloading the breaker could cause a complete power shut down or a fire. Following these simple steps will ensure you get all the ambience of your outdoor patio lighting without the risk.

There are a lot of important factors to consider when you’re thinking of putting in landscape lighting. The exterior of your home is an extension of the inside of your home.

Your style and personality should shine through in every aspect of your landscaping and this includes how you light it up. If your home isn’t properly lit then no one will be able to see it in the manner it should be seen in.

Your landscape lighting is also an important safety consideration for your home. Many studies have shown that homes with good exterior lighting are less likely to be burglarized. It can also be a safety feature for your guests. The last thing you want if for your neighbor to come visit and break an ankle tripping over something they couldn’t see.

In order to get the best and most natural looking lighting, observe the light patterns around your home. Go outside at various times of the day and see where the light is. See what the natural light highlights and what it shadows, this is what you’ll ideally try to recreate.

Using subtle light that tries to recreate the sunlight will create the best look and not look overdone. Also consider what areas of your yard you’d like to highlight. Maybe you have a fantastic garden or a stunning pond, these are things you’ll want to showcase. For these things a more direct lighting source is best.

What you will likely end up doing is using a combination of light sources to achieve a fantastic result. Moonlighting is a very popular technique. Basically its placing a light in the branch of a tree and letting the light filter through naturally, it creates a very dramatic effect.

Uplighting is also popular and is the exact opposite of moonlights. Its placing a light on the ground and letting it shine up at an object. Shadowing is the process of putting a light behind an object and works well for statues or sculptures. Combining these effects and others will make your home truly one of a kind. Now that you have some ideas you can begin installing your landscape lighting.

How easy is installing landscape lighting for the do it yourself person? You have probably been wondering this since you began considering landscape lighting. The truth is that it is not as difficult as some would have you believe.

Digging the trenches for the electric cables is probably the hardest part, and even that is mostly just hard work not technically difficult. Apart from that determination all you need is the system and about 10-12 hours of time.

The first step is planning out where you want your lighting to go. Lay the lights and voltage cables out where you want them so that you know you have enough materials. Just a tip, the lights will look the best 8-10 feet apart, and place the first one at least ten feet from the transformer.

Now you need to move those lights aside and turn over the sod. Be sure to keep it as in tact as you can so that you can put it back in place around the lighting fixtures. After the sod if out of the way, use the shovel to create a small trench where you will put the cable. About 3 inches deep should suffice.

Now you need to bury the cable. Lay is in the trench and be sure to leave a little slack where each of the fixtures will go. Smooth the soil back over the cable and be sure to pull it through so the cable shows for each fixture point.

If the transformer isn’t already plugged in you should do so now. Each transformer will vary on the procedure so check the instructions. Now its time to put the fixtures back in place, using a stake to make holes in the ground at appropriate intervals.

Connect the fixtures to the cable according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Push all wiring back under the soil and replace the sod and you are finished with installing landscape lighting.

Back in the good old days the most extensive pool lighting setup was the bulb in the deep end of the pool. Other than that no other light of landscaping was seen as necessary.

But times have changed. Today having the pool isn’t enough. Homeowners want to have a nice looking pool area that not only looks great but also can be used any time of the day or night either for entertaining or personal enjoyment. Today your options for outdoor lighting around your pool are as limitless as lighting fixtures in your living room.

Lighting around the pool area is an important yet often overlooked feature. Underwater and area lighting should be present to provide the greatest degree of safety. For the underwater lighting you can still get the incandescent or halogen lights that have been used for years but an increasingly popular option if fiber optic lighting.

Since there is no electricity with fiber optics they are incredibly safe for use around water. Maintenance tends to be very easy as well and the lights will be highly customizable. Let’s say you’re having a poolside party and want to jazz up the pool lighting to match the decorations.

You can get a color wheel to add to the light source so that you can quickly change the color of the fiber optics, it just takes a quick change of a snap-on lens. You can make the pool even snazzier by adding a fiber optic strip bordering the pool to make it look even sharper.

If you still choose an incandescent or halogen bulb be aware of its placement. The biggest problem with these lights is the glare off the water. If that glare is reflecting right into your bedroom window, which will be very inconvenient. If there’s no way to avoid this problem, you can install a dimmer to minimize it. But if there is any option that prevents the glare, you should take it.

If you‘ve ever been on someone’s deck and noticed a very soft light that was so inconspicuous that you hardly noticed the source, you may have already experienced recessed deck lighting. This is becoming the most popular way to light a deck area for many reasons, including the ease of self-installation.

Recessed lighting is deck fixtures that are installed into the surface of the deck or patio, including the railings or stairs. The lights are even with the surface and come in two different varieties, rectangular or disc shape.

Which type you choose will depend on the effect you want to create. The rectangular lights create a brighter and more direct light. The disk lights create a small beam of light and are much more subtle.

Since the lighting fixtures are made of such a durable material there is no risk of damaging them through everyday use. You could even drive your car over the light and no damage would be done.

Recessed deck lighting is available with all power sources that you’d expect from other outdoor lighting. You can get low voltage, normal voltage or even solar powered recessed lighting. Any option that you choose will come in a kit that is extremely easy for you to install yourself. Recessed lighting can serve two essential purposes for your deck and patio area. First it will provide safety by illuminating the stairs and the perimeter of the deck. This will allow you to have the safest deck possible for you and your guests.

Recessed lighting can also create a very special ambience and give the deck a much more relaxed feel that is missing from more direct lighting. You can choose a combination of wall mounted lighting and recessed lighting, but just using one or the other will work just as well.

Another idea is using recessed lighting to give your deck an extra special look by placing the lights in between the railing posts on the deck. The shadowing and light that will be cast from this unusual placement will create a fantastic place for entertaining.

Outdoor Deck lighting has changed a lot over the last few decades. No more do you have to put up a bulb and screw it in to turn it on every night. No longer do you have to hope to get the seat where you won’t get blinded by the glare. You can use the wide variety of lighting fixtures to add beauty, ambiance, and security to your deck. Use this space to entertain your friends and provide security to your home.

Nearly all deck lighting comes in low-voltage systems, which emanates the soft light that is perfect for a patio or deck. These systems come in a kit with everything you need to that you can set it up yourself quite easily. However, if you live somewhere with a lot of light there is solar powered lighting as well. These have no wires, so are even easier to install. If you want to install a hot tub or pool on your deck, solar powered lighting is the safest around water.

You can find lighting that you can mount on the wall next to your desk or put in the ground around the deck area. This will depend on what sort of aura you want to create. More direct lighting will be better for security purposes but may be a little too direct for an entertainment setting. Putting the light around your deck makes for a softer light and if better for entertaining, but you may want to consider a secondary light source for security. A motion sensor system would be perfect for this, but can be disabled for the times you don’t need to use it.

One method of lighting a deck that is becoming more popular is recessed deck lighting. This is a type of light that is designed to be mounted into the surface of the deck. This creates a very different and special effect with the light, especially when used to light the deck’s stairs. This is a nice effect and great for safety too.
